AFTERNOON AT THE ORCHARD (2018 2ND EDITION) 17th February 2018
Woughton Working Party -
Join MSOG for their second edition of an ‘Afternoon at the Orchard’ for 2018, at their regular Winter Time of 1pm to 4pm.
In this second edition of 2018, our activities will cover:
• Formative pruning of the apple and pear trees in the New Orchard: shaping the trees to optimise their structure for fruiting and keep canopy centres open to light and air
• Winter pruning of the apple trees in the New Orchard: removing dead wood and crossing branches and removing unwanted twigs
• Collecting, labelling and logging the varieties of scionwood (one year old branches) from each tree, for the Springtime Scionwood Swap on February 24th
• Affixing new labels to the trees, to make it easier to identify them throughout the year
Dress warmly for working outdoors on this kind of late winter afternoon. Wear long sleeves and long trousers to avoid being scratched by brambles. Bring a hat to keep your head warm! Wear stout shoes or boots and bring along your own gardening gloves. If you have your own pruning shears, loppers, pruning saws or pole saws, please bring them along to use. The venue is the Woughton Orchards, Woughton on the Green, Milton Keynes, MK6 3BS. Parking is in Newport Road and generally meet up there at the start time.
Come along and join them for a few hours of enjoyable outdoor work, in a lovely orchard setting, with good company. Well-

It's free to come along and join in. Donations are welcomed towards the refreshments, or bring some cake or biscuits to share.

Celebrate our 10th Anniversary! Orchard groups, fruit tree owners and top fruit enthusiasts are invited to join the Mid Shires Orchard Group as we celebrate our 10th anniversary as the county orchard group for Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire, at our 10th annual Springtime Scionwood Swap. This fascinating event will be held from 10.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday February 24th 2018, at Buckingham Garden Centre, Tingewick, Buckingham, MK18 4AE.

These can be grafted on the day onto rootstocks of choice, or be taken home for grafting, to make brand new fruit trees. These can be grown on and planted out in gardens, community or home orchards, fields and hedgerows, where they will mature and in due course, bear wonderful heritage fruit.
Originating in the USA… This festival of fruit tree swapping originated in the USA, where apple trees as we know them have been planted and nurtured since the first European settlers landed and set up home. Scionwood Swaps are a great way of getting into home fruit growing, as well as conserving rare fruit trees and spreading vital skills and knowledge. It’s a social event with an educational slant – enjoy good company & learn something new! Nurtured in the UK… The Mid Shires Orchard Group set up the UK's first and only Scionwood Swap in 2009; it was hosted by Buckingham Garden Centre then and we are very pleased to be returning to the original venue again this year, for our 10th Anniversary event. For ten years, every springtime, MSOG members, community orchards, orchard groups, fruit tree enthusiasts, family gardeners and visitors have been able to obtain many rare and local heritage apple varieties, to plant in their gardens and home orchards. We can graft the scionwood onto rootstocks of all sizes on the day, also rootstocks can be purchased for home grafting
Bring along scionwood from your favourite apple trees...Swap these for others and have new trees grafted ‘while you wait’. None to swap? Acquire scionwood from a wide selection on offer on the day, for a nominal sum. Take your scionwood home to graft your own new trees, or have trees made on the day.
