We are a family run garden centre that is well known nationally as a specialist for bare rooted hedging plants and young trees. The Garden Centre always has a good selection of shrubs and plants which are not commonly found elsewhere, together with a wide range of the more commonly sought after plants. Established for over 50 years, the Garden Centre has recently been redeveloped to a high standard. Our shop contains the largest selection of seeds and bulbs for miles around, together with garden chemicals, tools, garden furniture and many other goods. Outside we stock peat-based and peat-free composts, paving, fencing, timber decking, garden buildings and greenhouses, and a large range of pots, statues and garden ornaments. Our aquatics centre has a good reputation for their excellent quality tropical, marine and cold water fish. The Gardeners' Retreat, our coffee shop/restaurant, serves fresh home cooked food and is an excellent way to round off any visit to the Garden Centre.
Despite the late start to the season, many shrubs and perennials are quickly catching up. These may need tying in or staking to ensure the flowers are not spoilt by summer gales.
Unfortunately warmer days means there is no time for sitting around too much. Weeds are also growing at an alarming rate and pests and disease are luxuriating and multiplying by the minute. Keep a watchful eye out and take appropriate action before the problems escalate.
Plant out summer bedding by the end of the month – keep some fleece handy for any late frosts.
Collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for irrigation.
Regularly hoe off weeds. You can also spot treat perennial weeds growing in beds and borders with Roundup Weedkiller Gel.
Plant up your Tomatoes, Peppers, Cucumbers and Aubergines in cropping bags. They need a sunny location well out of cold winds.
Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days. Apply greenhouse shading as temperatures rise.
Mow lawns weekly and complete any lawn care feeding and weeding by the end of the month.
Check for nesting birds before clipping hedges.
Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs. Feed bulbs with Miracle-Gro Bulb Booster before the foliage dies down.
Watch out for Viburnum Beetle and Lily Beetle grubs. Tackle them with Provado Ultimate Bug Killer to help reduce the damage. Remember this insecticide is systemic and stays active within the plant for up to 6 weeks. Always follow the instructions carefully on the packaging before applying the product.
